For our mothers, our grandmothers,
our Nanas and our Mimis.

And for our children, and our children’s children. For every young person still deciding who they are — and for the strong fathers, and the good men who stay.

We are strong because of you. We are great mothers because of you. We are great sisters because of you. You are the root. We are just the part of the plant that happens to be blooming right now.

May this be the season our families rest easy with one another.

And for Boone, on his first birthday gone.

Love does not stop when someone leaves.
It just changes address.

The Rose
Remembers You

Everyone who loves the Mother
is welcome here.

Anything that harms
another person is not.

That’s the entire gate. There’s no credential to show, no tradition to belong to, no test to pass. Come in by whatever name you first knew her.

This garden grows as you read.
Nothing here is a streak, a score, or a comparison.
It just remembers that you came.

Take your time. The rose opens on her own clock and so do you.

The Garden

Good evening

Today's rose is open.

From the book, today

The heaviness in your head is a visitor, not a resident.

Chapter Seven

The Rising

Jacob dreamed of a ladder set on the earth with its top reaching heaven, and the messengers of God were going up and down on it. That's Genesis 28. Notice that it goes both directions. Heaven comes down as much as we go up.

Scroll. The light moves in both directions.

The Four Maps

These are not the same map. The metaphysics differ, and this book will not pretend otherwise. What they share is a direction. The phenomenology rhyming doesn't prove the maps agree — it proves the mountain is real.

The Three Floors

A house with three floors. This is the version I'd teach a child.

Choose a floor.

How You Stay

You will go up. Almost everyone goes up sometimes. The rare part is not sliding back down by Tuesday.

Gentle pacing, always. If a practice is making you worse — more anxious, more fragmented, more afraid — stop it. Intensive practice can bring up hard material. Get real support. There is no spiritual credit for injuring yourself.

    Chapter Ten

    The Rose Apothecary

The rose is not only a symbol. She is a working plant, and she has been in the medicine cabinet of the human race for four thousand years.

Only use roses you know are unsprayed. Florist roses are usually treated and are not for baths, tea, or skin. Never take essential oils internally. Patch-test anything new. If you're pregnant, nursing, or on medication, ask a real practitioner.

    Chapter Eleven

    The Ceremonies

A home with ceremony in it raises different children.

    Chapter Twelve

    The Beads

A rosary is a rose garden made of counting.

A working rosary. Tap a bead.

    Begin at the cross.

    How to Use This

There is no wrong way in. But if you like being shown, here is the whole thing in six short pieces.

Nothing here keeps score. No streaks, no badges, no comparison to anyone else. Close it in the middle of a sentence and come back in a month. The garden will still be open.
